Keep an Open Mind Life Hack

Think about the various people in your life. Who strikes you as the most open-minded? When I do, its children that come to mind. They are constantly learning, having new ideas presented to them…and if they’re lucky…they’re surrounded by adults who are NOT filling their heads with “you can’t or shouldn’t.”

A short story:  As a teenager, one of my first cars was a stick shift…I didn’t know how to drive a manual shift car, and had my mother gone with me to buy it, I still wouldn’t. But she didn’t, my grandfather did. We bought the car and I spent the entire day teaching myself how to drive stick shift; because no one ever told me I couldn’t! But had my mother gone with me that day, instead of my grandfather and discovered it was in fact a stick shift…she would have said “you don’t know how to drive that kind of car so we’re not buying it!” She didn't mean me any harm...but she was worried I wouldn't have the tenacity to learn on my own; and not knowing how to drive one herself, she had no one to teach me. But I was up for the challenge and LOVE driving this kind of car!

Moral of the story? If you’re raised to believe you “can’t do something” you won’t or you’ll struggle to find your place or prove it otherwise. But when adults raise their children to believe they can do anything they put their minds to…then they truly can!

Here’s a simple hack you can do to stay or become open-minded. Emulate the mind of a child and never stop learning. Believe in yourself, that you can. That’s easily said, but how do you take action?

There are plenty of opportunities to learn new things all around you. You can start by reading books or watching documentaries on topics that interest you. TV has been given such a bad rap for adults and children but if watching the right and appropriate channels and networks they're an abundance of information and quite educational! If you have a community college or even university in your area, check into their continued learning programs. You may find some great classes.

If you enjoy listening to audiobooks, consider sites like Audible.com. Not only do they have plenty of fiction and nonfiction audio books, they also have great courses which are series of University lectures that have been recorded as well as a section on "self development." Or utilize your phone’s apps like Google play and the Apple store.

Another option may be to pick up a new hobby. It’s fun and educational to learn a new skill. Get into gardening, work on your woodworking skills, or pick up knitting. How about a painting class, or coloring for adults…taking your pages up a notch by framing them or making them into 3D images?

Let’s not forget your professional life. I’m sure there are many programs, courses and certifications you could consider that not only help you continue to learn and keep an open mind, but also help you gain a higher position and earn a higher income in your career.

Learning a new language is another great option. Not only will it help you communicate in a new way, most language courses also teach you quite a bit about the culture of the country or region the language is spoken in. As you start to learn, try to reach out to some native speakers and learn even more about their culture and their day-to-day lives. The internet is making it possible for us to have conversations and make friends with people across the globe.

Speaking of the internet, it is an amazing resource at our fingertips for learning just about anything. YouTube in particular is very helpful when you’re learning a new craft or skill. Check it out and make it a habit to keep on learning. Then turn your skills into money by selling them online. So many possibilities here in your reach, you just have to grab them - realizing all the while…nothing is out of your reach…NOTHING!
